HSK vocabulary is cumulative.
By the end of HSK 4, you are expected to know 2,000 words in total, but only 1,000 of them are newly introduced at this level.
| Level | New words | Cumulative vocabulary |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 300 | 300 |
| HSK 2 | 200 | 500 |
| HSK 3 | 500 | 1,000 |
| HSK 4 | 1,000 | 2,000 |
If you have completed HSK 3, your new HSK 4 vocabulary target is:
Words 1001–2000 — 1,000 new words
The PDF focuses on those 1,000 new words instead of repeating the first 1,000 words already covered through HSK 3.
If you need to review earlier vocabulary, use the HSK 1, HSK 2, and HSK 3 PDF pages separately.
The HSK 4 vocabulary PDF is designed as a printable checklist for the vocabulary newly introduced at Level 4.
The PDF begins with word 1001 啊 (ā) and ends with 2000 作者 (zuòzhě).
Keeping the cumulative numbering visible makes it clear where HSK 3 ends and HSK 4 begins.
You can use the PDF as a printable checklist or offline reference.
For search, flashcards, example sentences, and usage notes for selected words, use the online HSK 4 Vocabulary List.
You may still find HSK 4 PDFs and vocabulary lists online that contain 1,200 words.
Those materials generally follow the previous HSK system.
1,200 cumulative words
2,000 cumulative words
Under the new standard used on this page:
That means HSK 4 adds 1,000 new words, covering cumulative words 1001–2000.
If you are comparing PDFs, textbooks, vocabulary lists, or study apps, check which HSK standard they follow before comparing word counts.

The three resources serve different purposes.
The PDF is best for a clean checklist and offline review. The online vocabulary page is better when you need examples, search, or active review. The official sample materials show how HSK 4 language appears inside the exam.
Work through the checklist once before trying to memorize the entire list.
Mark familiar words and leave uncertain words unchecked. With 1,000 new words at HSK 4, identifying weak areas first is more useful than treating every word as equally unfamiliar.
HSK 4 includes more connectors, formal vocabulary, multi-function words, and context-dependent meanings.
When a word is difficult to understand from a short English gloss, open the online HSK 4 vocabulary page to see an example sentence, flashcard, or usage note.
Do not try to work through all 1,000 new words as one unit.
Use manageable groups and return to earlier groups during later review sessions. The PDF checklist makes it easy to see which sections still need work.
HSK 4 adds 1,000 words, but the first 1,000 words from HSK 1–3 are still part of the cumulative requirement.
Continue mixing earlier vocabulary into your review while you work through words 1001–2000.
The vocabulary PDF and the official sample materials solve different problems.
The vocabulary PDF helps you build the language base required at HSK 4. The official sample materials show how that vocabulary and grammar are used in the test.
Complete the sample questions under realistic conditions first.
Look again at incorrect answers and questions that felt uncertain.
If vocabulary caused the problem, return to the HSK 4 vocabulary list and review the relevant words.
If the language was familiar, spend more time practicing the exam format and working with connected passages.
