What Is HSK 6?

HSK 6 is the highest level in the HSK 1–6 sequence and the final level before the advanced HSK 7–9 band.

By this point, Chinese is no longer mainly about everyday situations or simply expressing an opinion.

You need to follow complex information, understand tone and implied meaning, and adjust your communication to the situation.

This can mean:

  • following a detailed interview
  • understanding a report or article
  • handling formal information
  • comparing different points of view
  • giving reasons for your position
  • writing for a real-world purpose

At HSK 5, the big step is learning to sustain an idea across a longer piece of Chinese.

At HSK 6, the next step is learning to make that Chinese more precise, flexible, and appropriate for the situation.

What Does the HSK 6 Exam Test?

HSK 6 covers four main skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

The written exam includes Listening, Reading, and Writing. A corresponding Level 6 speaking test checks whether you can retell, explain, describe, and discuss more complex ideas aloud.

Listening

40 questions · About 30 min

The HSK 6 Listening section contains 40 questions and takes about 30 minutes.

The material can include longer conversations, interviews, reports, explanations, and news-style content.

You may need to follow:

  • several details at once
  • changes in a speaker’s point
  • cause and effect
  • comparisons
  • opinions and attitudes
  • implied meaning
  • information introduced earlier in the passage

At HSK 6, the hardest part is often not understanding one sentence.

It is keeping track of the whole message while new information keeps coming.

Reading

40 questions · 40 min

The Reading section contains 40 questions and takes about 40 minutes.

The texts become denser, and simply recognizing the vocabulary is no longer enough.

  • vocabulary in context
  • sentence relationships
  • paragraph structure
  • missing or implied information
  • the writer’s purpose
  • tone and attitude
  • how an argument develops

A useful way to think about HSK 6 reading is:

You need to read for structure as well as meaning.

If you understand every sentence separately but lose the relationship between them, you can still miss the point of the passage.

Writing

2 tasks · About 45 min

The HSK 6 Writing section contains 2 tasks and gives you about 45 minutes.

The two tasks test different kinds of writing.

150+ characters · Practical / functional writing

300+ characters · Opinion / argumentative writing

HSK 6 writing is not just HSK 5 writing with a higher word count.

You need to think more carefully about why you are writing, who the writing is for, and how your ideas should be organized.

Speaking

Separate speaking test · About 23 min

The Level 6 speaking test takes about 23 minutes, including preparation time.

The overall task format is similar to Level 5, but the topics and expected responses become more demanding.

You may need to retell information, explain an abstract idea, compare different views, give reasons, and support your opinion with examples.

HSK 6 Speaking Test

The test includes about 10 minutes of preparation time.

The structure may look familiar if you have already prepared for HSK 5, but the content is more demanding.

At HSK 6, you are more likely to deal with topics that require explanation, judgment, comparison, or a more abstract point of view.

The goal is not to sound perfect.

The goal is to give a response that is clear, organized, detailed enough, and easy to follow.

HSK 6 Writing: Practical Writing and Argument

Writing is one of the clearest ways HSK 6 moves beyond HSK 5.

At HSK 5, you learn to produce longer connected writing.

At HSK 6, you need to change how you write depending on the purpose.

150+ characters · Practical Writing

300+ characters · Argumentative Writing

Practical Writing — 150+ Characters

The first writing task asks you to produce a practical piece of Chinese of at least 150 characters.

The exact situation may vary, but the key question is:

Can you give the right information clearly and in a form that fits the situation?

Think about:

  • purpose
  • audience
  • important details
  • organization
  • tone
  • clarity

You do not need to make the writing sound fancy.

You need to make it useful and easy to understand.

Argumentative Writing — 300+ Characters

The second writing task requires at least 300 Chinese characters.

Here, you need to do more than state an opinion.

A strong response usually needs:

  • a clear position
  • reasons
  • explanation
  • examples
  • logical connections
  • a clear conclusion

The difficult part is not simply reaching 300 characters.

It is keeping one clear line of thought from beginning to end.

At HSK 6, good writing is not just longer.

It needs a clear purpose and a clear line of thought.

HSK 6 Vocabulary: 5,400 Words

Under the new HSK standard, HSK 6 requires 5,400 total vocabulary words.

HSK 5 ends at 3,600 words, so HSK 6 adds 1,800 new words, covering cumulative vocabulary numbers 3601–5400.

HSK vocabulary progression through Level 6
LevelNew wordsTotal vocabulary
HSK 1300300
HSK 2200500
HSK 35001,000
HSK 41,0002,000
HSK 51,6003,600
HSK 61,8005,400

The vocabulary also becomes broader and more formal.

  • economics and finance
  • science and technology
  • government and public life
  • institutions and organizations
  • social issues
  • history and culture
  • argument and evaluation
  • formal written Chinese

货币 · 基金 · 机制 · 基因 · 集团 · 当代 · 档案 · 资本 · 资产

At this level, context becomes extremely important.

A short English definition may tell you what a word means, but it often does not tell you when that word sounds natural or how it differs from a similar word.

At HSK 5, being able to explain an idea at length is already a major step.

At HSK 6, you need to go further.

You need to decide what matters, how to organize it, and what kind of language fits the situation.

How to Prepare for HSK 6

  1. 01

Build the 1,800 New Words in Context

Do not treat words 3601–5400 as one giant memorization project.

Learn them in smaller groups, but spend more time seeing them inside real sentences and longer passages.

At HSK 6, context is what helps many similar or formal words finally make sense.

  2. 02

Read for Structure, Not Just Vocabulary

When you read an article, pay attention to how the ideas are organized, not just the individual words.

    • What is the main point?
    • Where does the writer change direction?
    • Which example supports which idea?
    • What conclusion is the text moving toward?

At HSK 6, understanding the structure can matter just as much as understanding every sentence.

  3. 03

    Practice Longer Listening Without Pausing

Replay difficult material when you need to, but also practice listening straight through.

Try longer interviews, reports, talks, or documentaries without stopping every few seconds.

Train yourself to keep the main idea even when you miss a detail.

  4. 04

    Practice Both Types of Writing

Do not prepare only for long opinion essays.

    • 150+ character practical writing
    • 300+ character argumentative writing

One tests whether you can communicate clearly for a real purpose. The other tests whether you can build and support an argument.

  5. 05

Practice Explaining Abstract Ideas Out Loud

HSK 6 speaking can move well beyond familiar daily topics.

Practice questions where there is no single obvious answer.

    • What makes technology useful or harmful?
    • How should people balance work and life?

The point is not to find the “correct” opinion. It is to explain your thinking clearly.

  6. 06

    Use Real Chinese Regularly

At HSK 6, textbook-only Chinese starts to become limiting.

    • news
    • interviews
    • essays
    • reports
    • documentaries
    • longer articles

You do not need to understand everything. Regular exposure helps you get used to the speed, structure, and vocabulary of real Chinese.

Why Do Older HSK 6 Guides Show Different Numbers?

If you search for HSK6 online, you may still find guides showing 5,000+ vocabulary words, 101 written questions, about 140 minutes, and one long summary-style writing task.

Those materials generally describe the previous HSK 6 system.

Written test time~140 min~125 min

The old writing task was especially different.

In the previous format, candidates read a long passage and then rewrote it as a shorter summary without adding their own opinion.

The new structure tests two different kinds of writing instead.

So if two HSK 6 guides seem to contradict each other, check which version of the exam they are describing.

Older materials may still be useful Chinese practice, but their vocabulary numbers, test structure, timing, and writing tasks should not automatically be treated as the new HSK 6 format.
