What Is HSK 5?

HSK 5 marks another major step in Chinese proficiency.

At HSK 4, learners begin moving from individual sentences toward connected paragraphs. At HSK 5, the focus shifts toward extended communication: following longer discussions, understanding more complex texts, explaining ideas, expressing opinions, and producing sustained spoken and written responses.

The range of topics also becomes broader. These include:

  • education
  • work and careers
  • business and management
  • science and technology
  • social issues
  • arts and literature
  • sports
  • international exchange
  • history
  • Chinese culture and traditions

The challenge is increasingly about following how ideas develop across a longer passage and communicating your own ideas with structure and detail.

What Does the HSK 5 Exam Test?

HSK 5 evaluates four main language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

The written test covers Listening, Reading, and Writing. A corresponding Level 5 speaking test assesses your ability to retell, describe, and respond at greater length.

Listening

35 questions · About 25 min

The HSK 5 Listening section contains 35 questions and takes about 25 minutes.

The listening material becomes longer and more information-dense than at HSK 4. You need to follow:

  • longer conversations
  • longer spoken passages
  • details across several sentences
  • relationships between ideas
  • speakers’ opinions and attitudes
  • implied meaning
  • cause, result, and change

At this level, hearing familiar words is not enough. You need to hold information in mind while the recording continues and understand how the different parts fit together.

Reading

35 questions · 35 min

The Reading section contains 35 questions and takes 35 minutes.

HSK 5 reading puts more emphasis on understanding connected text rather than isolated sentences. You may need to:

  • understand vocabulary and grammar from context
  • follow relationships between sentences
  • identify paragraph structure
  • reconstruct logical text order
  • find important details
  • identify the main idea
  • understand implied meaning
  • distinguish closely related ideas

A major HSK 5 skill is learning to keep reading even when you do not know every word. Context, structure, and the overall message become increasingly important.

Writing

2 tasks · About 40 min

The HSK 5 Writing section contains 2 tasks and takes about 40 minutes.

One task asks you to write a picture-based story of at least 100 Chinese characters. The other asks you to develop a longer response of at least 200 Chinese characters.

HSK 5 writing therefore moves well beyond sentence-level accuracy into sustained, organized writing.

Speaking

Separate speaking test · About 23 min

The Level 5 speaking test takes about 23 minutes, including preparation time.

You need to retell information, speak from pictures, and answer questions at greater length than at the earlier levels.

HSK 5 Exam Format and Time

The new HSK 5 written test has 72 questions across Listening, Reading, and Writing.

The test includes about 10 minutes of preparation time.

Compared with earlier levels, HSK 5 speaking asks you to stay on one topic for longer. You may need to retell information accurately, organize events in sequence, explain your reasoning, express an opinion, or support an answer with examples.

HSK 5 Writing: From Short Texts to Extended Composition

Writing is one of the clearest differences between HSK 4 and HSK 5.

At HSK 4, you begin connecting sentences into a coherent short text. At HSK 5, you need to sustain an idea across much longer writing.

100+ characters · Picture-Based Narrative

200+ characters · Extended Composition

Picture-Based Narrative

The picture-based task requires at least 100 Chinese characters.

A good response should turn the pictures into one coherent story, not simply describe each picture separately.

Think about:

  • sequence
  • cause and result
  • transitions
  • characters and actions
  • a clear beginning and ending

Extended Composition

The second task requires at least 200 Chinese characters.

You need enough language to develop a topic rather than simply state an opinion. You may need to:

  • introduce the topic
  • explain your position
  • give reasons
  • add examples
  • compare ideas
  • show cause and effect
  • reach a conclusion

Vocabulary, grammar, and organization now have to work together. This is why HSK 5 represents a shift from paragraph-level writing toward extended discourse.

HSK 5 Vocabulary: 3,600 Words

Under the new HSK standard, HSK 5 requires 3,600 cumulative vocabulary words.

HSK 4 ends at 2,000 words, so HSK 5 introduces 1,600 new words, covering cumulative vocabulary numbers 2001–3600.

HSK vocabulary progression through Level 5
LevelNew wordsCumulative vocabulary
HSK 1300300
HSK 2200500
HSK 35001,000
HSK 41,0002,000
HSK 51,6003,600

The increase is not only about quantity. HSK 5 adds more language for:

  • abstract ideas
  • social issues
  • education and work
  • formal written Chinese
  • opinions and evaluation
  • cause and effect
  • comparison and argument
  • culture, history, and public life

At this level, knowing one short English translation for a word is increasingly insufficient. You need to understand how words behave inside longer sentences and different contexts.

The biggest difference is the amount of information you need to manage at one time.

At HSK 4, producing a clear paragraph is already an important skill. At HSK 5, you need to follow and produce longer stretches of connected Chinese without losing the main idea.

HSK 5 Score and Passing

Current published HSK 5 scoring references use three written sections:

  • Listening: 100 points
  • Reading: 100 points
  • Writing: 100 points

Total: 300 points

A score of 180/300 has been used as the published passing reference for HSK 5.

How to Prepare for HSK 5

  1. 01

Build the 1,600 New Words in Manageable Groups

HSK 5 adds 1,600 new words, so do not treat words 2001–3600 as one giant list.

Study them in smaller groups and keep older HSK 1–4 vocabulary active at the same time.

  2. 02

Read Longer Texts Without Translating Every Sentence

If you stop every time you meet an unfamiliar word, HSK 5 reading becomes very slow.

Practice continuing through the paragraph and ask what the topic is, what the writer is trying to say, which information matters most, and what you can infer from context.

The goal is understanding the text as a whole, not translating every sentence perfectly.

  3. 03

    Track Paragraph Structure

Pay attention to how Chinese texts connect ideas.

    • cause and result
    • contrast
    • sequence
    • examples
    • explanation
    • conclusion

These relationships become increasingly important at HSK 5.

  4. 04

Practice Timed 100- and 200-Character Writing

Practice both writing formats before the exam so 100 and 200 Chinese characters do not feel unfamiliar.

Before writing, take a moment to decide your main point, the order of your ideas, one useful example or detail, and how you will finish.

  5. 05

Practice Retelling, Not Only Short Answers

HSK 5 speaking requires you to hold information in memory and retell it in your own words.

    • who was involved
    • what happened
    • why it happened
    • what the result was

Focus on preserving the meaning and structure rather than repeating every sentence exactly.

  6. 06

    Expand Beyond Everyday Topics

Continue using Chinese for daily life, but add broader material about education, careers, technology, society, culture, history, business, and public issues.

HSK 5 increasingly tests whether you can understand and discuss ideas, not only everyday situations.

Why Do Older HSK 5 Guides Show Different Numbers?

If you search for HSK5 online, you may still find guides listing 2,500 vocabulary words, 100 written questions, and about 125 minutes.

Those materials generally describe the previous HSK 5 format.

If two HSK 5 websites appear to contradict each other, first check which version of the HSK they are describing.

Older materials can still be useful for general Chinese practice, but their word counts, test format, and timing should not automatically be treated as the new HSK 5 structure.
